Some ways to feel safe

Without secure relationships as our psychological bedrock, feeling safe with people can be quite challenging. Our instinct for self preservation comes before our need to bond, which is the biological make-up of our brain. In neurology, we know that our primitive brain which comprises our brain-stem is first formed before our limbic brain (commonly known as our social brain). By promoting state of calmness in our body through the physical exercises described by Peter Levine in this video, the primitive brain receives nerves signal to calm down, reducing neuron firing in that area, thus reducing consumption of oxygen and energy. This leaves a person more access to their higher brain area which is the limbic brain. It is hard for a person to engage socially when he/she does not feel safe. Promoting state of safety through our body therefore precedes cognitive understanding through verbal interaction.
